Kandy holds a unique place in Sri Lankan history and identity as the island’s final royal capital. Nested in the picturesque central hills, the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the spiritual heart of the island’s Buddhist culture. The centerpiece of Kandy is the magnificent Sri Dalada Maligawa, or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which houses the relic of the Buddha’s tooth. This relic is considered the island’s most prized possession, and its presence makes Kandy one of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world.
The Beauty of Kandy Lake
The city’s beautiful environment is anchored by the scenic Kandy Lake (Bōgala Lake). Built in 1807, the lake adds immense charm and tranquility to the urban setting, offering locals and visitors a peaceful pathway for evening strolls. Surrounding the lake are many of the city’s key attractions, including the Temple complex and the historic British-era hotels.
Beyond the City Walls
Just outside the city centre lies the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya, one of Asia’s most spectacular botanical gardens. Spanning over 147 acres, it features a stunning collection of over 4,000 species of plants, including a magnificent collection of orchids and palms. Kandy also serves as the ideal starting point for the scenic train journey through the rolling tea estates of the Hill Country to places like Nuwara Eliya and Ella.
