Kalutara is a historic coastal town located where the large Kalu Ganga (Black River) meets the Indian Ocean. While the town offers long, quiet stretches of beach and high-quality resort accommodation, its most defining feature is its immense spiritual significance. Due to its strategic location and beauty, Kalutara is a popular stopover for travelers heading between Colombo and the Southern beaches.
The Hollow Dagoba (Chaitya)
The town is instantly recognizable by the massive, pure-white Kalutara Bōdhiya complex, located right at the northern entrance to the city. This site is home to one of the 32 saplings of the Sri Maha Bodhi tree and features the only hollow Dagoba (stupa) in the world—the Kalutara Vihara Chaitya. Visitors can step inside the Dagoba, which is decorated with stunning murals depicting the Jataka tales, offering a unique spiritual experience and panoramic views of the river mouth.
Coastal Relaxation and River Activities
Kalutara’s coastline is known for its quiet, wide beaches, often backed by large international hotels, making it ideal for relaxing breaks. The Kalu Ganga River offers opportunities for river safaris into the tranquil interior, providing a contrast to the bustling coast. The town is also historically famous for its production of excellent quality mangosteens and local basket weaving crafts.
